Student leadership

Each year student leaders are elected to represent the student body at Gowrie State School.

The aims of the Gowrie State School Student Leadership Program are to:
•Endorse the beliefs and values of the school, both in school and the wider community. At the forefront is the Gowrie 5R’s: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Rigour and Relationships. The Gowrie 5 R’s are ‘lived’ everyday at our school through words and actions. We work together with staff, students, community to mentor student leadership.
•Promote the needs and interests of students, while providing opportunities to be involved in school decision making processes.
•Enhance the role of students as purposeful members of the school and wider community
•Recognise and support the positive role students play in the development of a supportive school environment
We are proud of our student leadership potential and pathways.

The student leadership team involves:
• School Captains
• School Vice Captains
• Sports House Captains for each house, Isaacs and Hughes
• Student Council Coordinators
• Media Officers
• Cultural Officers
• Student Council Representatives.

These students are chosen based upon merit within a selection process that is completed in Term 4 the year prior. This process involves:
• Student Self or Peer Nomination
• Completion of an Application Passport addressing selection criteria
• Shortlisting
• Student speeches and voting
• Interview with Principal, Positive Schools Team Teacher. A 2018 Review of this process has prompted innovation to include P&C representatives on the selection panel.

All student leadership positions are then announced at the end of the year. During the beginning of the following school year Student Council Representatives are chosen. A student leader’s induction ceremony is held where all leaders receive their leadership badges and complete the Gowrie State School leadership pledge.
