Gowrie State School has a thriving music program with many opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills. Along with general classroom music, which all students participate in, students can join the choir and the instrumental program.

Choir:

The choir meets every Wednesday at first break, rehearsing for exciting events outside school, like the biennial 'Sing Out' at the Empire Theatre and the Highfields Cluster Choir Day. Within the school, the Anzac Ceremony, the end of year Awards Night and school parades are also enhanced by the choir's performances. Other than the occasional bus fare, there are no costs for student participation.

Instrumental Music:

The Gowrie State School Instrumental Music program continues to hold a respected place within the school community with approximately 40 - 45 students involved in the program annually. Our Beginner program invites students to try out on Woodwind, Brass, Bass Guitar and Percussion instruments at the end of Grade 3, with weekly lessons beginning when students start Grade 4. All successful students are given the opportunity to hire a school instrument for their first year in the program. All continuing year 5 and 6 students form our Gowrie State School Concert Band. In addition to having lessons weekly, these students also take part in weekly before school band rehearsals. Beginner students are invited to join this ensemble once reaching an adequate level. It is an expectation that all continuing students have access to their own instrument.

Instrumental Music students regularly perform at school assemblies, The Highfields Cluster Schools Music Showcase, Grandparent's Day, Awards Night, in addition to competing at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod and taking part in the combined schools workshops hosted by Highfields State Secondary College in Term 1 and Term 4 each year.

Students from Year 4 - 6 are eligible for participation in the instrumental music program. Expressions of interest and try-outs are held in term 4 for interested year 3 students and other newly enrolled students. Please see our information in the link beside this column.
