Each year student leaders are elected to represent the student body at Gowrie State School. At Gowrie State School, as our senior students, all Year 6 students are leaders and have a shared responsibility to contribute to student wellbeing.

However, there is also an opportunity for 8 formal leadership positions. In gaining a formal leadership position, positive behaviour and adherence to the school's values are key expectations.

The aims of the Gowrie State School Student Leadership Program are to:

  • Endorse the beliefs and values of the school, both in school and the wider community. At the forefront is the Gowrie 5R’s: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Rigour and Relationships. The Gowrie 5 R’s are ‘lived’ everyday at our school through words and actions. We work together with staff, students, community to mentor student leadership.
  • Promote the needs and interests of students, while providing opportunities to be involved in school decision making processes.
  • Enhance the role of students as purposeful members of the school and wider community
  • Recognise and support the positive role students play in the development of a supportive school environment
  • We are proud of our student leadership potential and pathways.

The student leadership team involves:

  • School Captain - 2 positions available
  • School Vice Captain - 2 positions available
  • Sports House Captain - one for each house, Isaacs and Hughes
  • Wellbeing Captain - 2 positions available

These students are chosen based upon merit within a selection process that is completed in Term 4 the year prior. This process involves:

  1. Nominations open to all Year 5 students. After discussion with their parents, students nominate to be part of student leadership and write preferences for positions on the form.
  2. Returned nomination forms are then taken to the next staff meeting to be endorsed by staff.
  3. Students will receive a letter advising them if their nomination has been endorsed.
  4. Within class leadership lessons, students prepare a project design proposal (in groups initially) and then use this as the basis for their individual speech.
  5. Speeches are written and finalised during class leadership lessons; guidance will be given.
  6. Student speeches: 2 minutes maximum per nominee. 1 slide visual is permitted.
  7. Only endorsed nominees will present their speech to the student body (years 2-6). Parents are welcome to attend.
  8. Students in Year 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will undertake preferential voting for the 8 positions.
  9.  The top 8 ranking nominations will be awarded a student leadership position. Staff will place the top 8 ranked nominees into individual leadership positions based on their preferences.
  10. Names of incoming school leaders  will be announced on Awards Night.
  11. A Leadership Investiture Ceremony will be held early in the new year.

During the beginning of the following school year Student Council Representatives are elected from year 2 - 5. A student leader’s induction ceremony is held where all leaders receive their leadership badges and complete the Gowrie State School leadership pledge.
